"Locally Laid," by Lucie Amundsen. How far would you go to follow your dream? How about your husband's dream? What if that dream involved hundreds of chickens? And Duluth winters?

On a 10-years-married dinner date (no kids, Mexican food!), Jason confides his dream to Lucie, his love. Jason wants to be a farmer, of pasture-raised eggs. He cannot work in a cubicle anymore. So Lucie and Jason become farmers. …

This is a lovely, witty, fun and warm book. It is a pleasure to read Lucie's voice — she is so very funny. I loved her description of a favorite chick, a tawny-colored Buff Orpington: "She promised one day to be a bodacious plus-sized model of a chicken wearing fluffy pantaloons."

Shelftalker is an occasional feature of recommendations by booksellers. This week's comes from Buffalo Books and Coffee.
