Vikings guard Geoff Schwartz dealing with abdominal issue, no longer in Mankato

Posted by: under Vikings, Leslie Frazier, Leslie Frazier Updated: August 3, 2012 - 12:31 PM

Vikings guard Geoff Schwartz wasn’t present at this morning’s walk-through in Mankato and has been sent back to the Twin Cities to obtain further evaluation on what head coach Leslie Frazier is calling an abdominal strain.

Schwartz, who has been working as the back-up to Brandon Fusco at right guard, has had trouble staying healthy over the past year. He was on injured reserve all of last season with Carolina with a hip injury. Schwartz had surgery on his right hip and appeared to be headed back toward full health when training camp began last week.

Now this setback.

“[We want] to make sure there isn’t something else going on physically,” Frazier said of the decision to send Schwartz out of Mankato. “We’ll see when  we get the results back where things are. We want to run some tests. And we’ll know something a little bit more this afternoon.”

Frazier said Schwartz reported difficulty turning.

“He just couldn’t make any of the adjustments he needed to make when you turn in that direction,” Frazier said. “Obviously for an offensive lineman, we want him to be able to turn in either direction with ease. And he’s having trouble doing that. So we want him to go back, get it checked out and find out what’s going on.”

In other notable injury news, Pat Brown has a Grade 1 medial collateral ligament sprain and will miss the rest of this week’s practices. The Vikings believe Brown will be back in action next week.

Meanwhile, running back Jordan Todman sprained his ankle during Thursday’s practice and will likely be sidelined for at least a few days.
