Twins notes: Blood clot will keep Guerra out months

BRADENTON, FLA. – Not only did a mysterious ailment keep Deolis Guerra from pitching in the World Baseball Classic, it’s going to cost him half the 2013 season, too.

The Venezuelan righthander, sent home without ever appearing in the WBC, was hospitalized Friday when doctors discovered that the pain in his pitching shoulder was caused not by a sore pectoral muscle, but by a blood clot.

Guerra will remain in the hospital for a day or two, General Manager Terry Ryan said, until doctors are certain the clot has dissipated. And later this month, Guerra will undergo a rib resection — surgery to remove the first rib on his right side — in order to give the artery more room and prevent clots from reoccurring.

“It’s hard to figure why some of these things happen, but it did,” Ryan said. “Obviously the kid is disappointed. We’ll do everything to take care of it, and he’ll be healthy again, he’ll be pitching again.”

That won’t happen for a few months, though. Ryan wouldn’t put a timeline on Guerra’s recovery, but said similar procedures have kept pitchers out for three months or more.

 Another blunder

The Twins made another avoidable mistake in the field Saturday, and for the second day in a row, lack of communication was the problem, manager Ron Gardenhire said.

On Friday, Twins infielders didn’t holler at pitcher Mike Pelfrey before he threw too late to second base. The problem was in the outfield on Saturday, when Travis Snider lifted a routine fly ball into right-center field in the first inning. Joe Benson and Darin Mastroianni converged on the ball, and as Benson tried to catch it, they bumped into each other, knocking the ball to the ground for an error.

“He didn’t call it,” Gardenhire said of Benson’s mistake. “He didn’t think Masty was coming, but he’s got to call the ball — ‘I got it, I got it.’ ”

Gardenhire said he was disappointed because the Twins have been practicing these fundamentals for almost a month. “A thousand times, we’ve talked about it,” he said.

. • Chris Parmelee didn’t take batting practice as scheduled Friday, because he still felt a lingering tightness in his groin. He will be evaluated again on Sunday, but it could be until midweek before he plays again, in order to make sure the injury heals completely. “It’s not too serious,” he said, “and I don’t want it to become serious.”

• Oswaldo Arcia’s spring debut will likely take place Sunday, Gardenhire said. The Class AA slugger has recovered from his strained intercostal muscle and has taken batting practice, but trainers will examine him once more to be certain.

• Gardenhire joked with Mastroianni after the game about being picked off by A.J. Burnett in the first inning. “His hammies are great,” the manager said within earshot of the outfielder. “He only got picked off by 7 yards. Normally he gets picked off by 9 or 10.”

On deck Liam Hendriks gets his fourth start of the spring when the Pirates, with lefthander Jonathan Sanchez scheduled to start, travel to Hammond Stadium.
