Minnesota fishing report

  • Updated: August 26, 2014 - 9:01 PM

Annandale area: Walleye action has been better in the mornings or evenings using spinner baits or crankbaits along weed edges at 15-20 feet on the flats of lakes such as Cedar, Clearwater, Syliva and Sugar Lake. Syliva, Clearwater, Cedar, John and Sugar Lakes are providing good sunfish action using night crawlers with Lindy Rigs along the weed edges at 8-15 feet. Northerns are active along weed lines using sucker minnows or spinner rigs.

Big Stone Lake: A few anglers catching walleyes on the Minnesota side trolling crankbaits. Otherwise, many anglers are catching lots of perch and white bass along Manhattan Island. Grapevine and Bayview Bay are providing good perch, walleye and blue gill action.

Detroit Lakes: Most area lakes are giving anglers good walleye action about 22-28 feet on mid-lake structures, using leeches on live bait rigs. Bass are being caught outside of large weed beds on lakes such as Melissa, Floyd, Long (both), McDonald and Cotton lakes. Good muskie action is on Big Detroit, Beers and Many Point lakes.

Ely area: Walleye action has been inconsistent, but a few anglers have caught a few using night crawlers or minnows. Northerns are hitting on spinner baits and spoons. For smallmouth bass, anglers are using topwater baits during the mornings or evenings. Crappie action is solid during the mornings or evenings at shallow depths using artificial baits.

Lake Mille Lacs: Anglers using a slip bobber/leech combination have had the best walleye action during the mornings or evenings on the rock reefs such as 3-mile and Hawkbill about 12-18 feet. Smallmouth bass is spotty, but some anglers are catching them at 7-14 feet near rocks.

Rainy Lake: Anglers are catching walleyes and northerns on the submerged reefs using a jig and a minnow about 30 feet. Good northern and crappie action is also on Cranberry Bay and Black Bay. On the Rainy River, walleyes are hitting on emerald shiner minnows.
