Gophers-Indiana game preview

  • Updated: January 11, 2013 - 10:02 PM

Gophers at a glance: The Gophers (15-1) hope to rekindle some of the magic from a year ago, when they upset the then-No. 7 Hoosiers for their best victory of the season. This season, the Gophers remain underdogs, but much less so after their ascent to No. 8 in the nation. Coming off their victory at No. 12 Illinois on Wednesday, they are 3-0 in conference play for the first time since their vacated 1996-97 Big Ten championship season. With that victory, the Gophers became only the second team in Division I with victories over three ranked teams, No. 1 Duke being the other. ... Joe Coleman is coming off a career-high 29-point performance Wednesday, when the Gophers shot 52.9 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point range.

Indiana at a glance: The No. 5 Hoosiers (14-1) come home after road victories at Iowa and Penn State. Indiana is similar to the Gophers in that it likes to get out in transition, play strong defense, rebound well and use a balanced scoring attack. But the Hoosiers have been even more efficient early on than the Gophers. They are shooting 51.1 from the floor -- fourth best in the country -- while hitting 41.9 percent of their three-pointers. Cody Zeller leads five starters in double figures with a 16.5-ppg average. With so many weapons, Indiana can win in a lot of ways, so defensive focus will be key.
