Cornhuskers top No. 10 Gophers volleyball in four sets

The Gophers volleyball team won the first set before losing 25-18, 25-27, 23-25, 18-25 to third-ranked Nebraska on Sunday in Lincoln, Neb.

The defeat dropped the 10th-ranked Gophers to 15-4 overall, 6-2 in the Big Ten. Nebraska is 15-2 and 7-1.

Ashley Wittman recorded her fourth consecutive double-double for the Gophers, with 14 kills and 10 digs. Katherine Harms also had a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs) and Tori Dixon had a match-high 16 kills and hit .682.

Senior outside hitter Gina Mancuso led Nebraska with 14 kills and a .343 hitting percentage.

Alexandra Palmer also had a double-double of 49 assists and a team-high 14 digs.

The Gophers will be host to Wisconsin on Wednesday.

Austin baseball coach Dick Seltz dies

Dick Seltz, who coached Austin (Minn.) High School to 509 victories from 1951 to 1986, died Thursday in Austin. He was 87.

Seltz, born in Bemidji, was a graduate of St. Paul Humboldt, a student at Hamline and a player in the farm systems of the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. He didn't have a losing season in his 36 years at Austin.

Uhl scores winner in Gophers' home finale

Allie Reinke set up sophomore Taylor Uhl in the 78th minute for the game's only goal, giving the Gophers soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northwestern in the 2012 home finale.

It was Uhl's 16th goal of the season.

The victory left the Gophers at 9-6-1 and tied for fourth in the Big Ten at 4-3-1.

Laguna places second; Gophers women third

Carmen Laguna's second-place finish carried the Gophers women's golf team to a third-place finish at the 13-team Hoosier Invitational in Florence, Ind.

Laguna closed with a 3-over-par 75 for a 54-hole score of 1-over 217. Sarinee Thitiratanakorn tied for ninth at 225 after a closing 75. Wisconsin senior Lindsay Danielson was medalist at 213.

The Badgers captured the team championship by two strokes over host Indiana with a score of 894. The Gophers were 10 strokes back at 904.
