University of Minnesota basketball coach Richard Pitino has dismissed senior guard Carlos Morris from the team, the school announced on Wednesday.

A release sent to media shortly before a previously scheduled news conference cited "conduct detrimental to the team" and Pitino would not further elaborate saying only that there was a specific incident that led to his decision.

"There was certainly something that happened," he said. "I'm not going to get into the details of what it was ...we addressed it and we move on."

Sophomore guard Nate Mason added the team was "shocked" to hear the news.

Morris, who joined Minnesota from Chipola College in Florida, started 16 games this season before getting replaced in the lineup by freshman Dupree McBrayer. He was the team's fourth leading scorer with 9.8 points per game and added 3.7 rebounds in 25.6 minutes a game.

Without him, the Gophers will have just nine scholarship players when they face off against No. 6 Maryland on Thursday. Freshmen Kevin Dorsey and Dupree McBrayer are expected to play more minutes.

The school noted Morris will remain on scholarship through gradutation.
