Swarm edge Philadelphia for first win

Captain Andrew Suitor’s goal at 9:43 of the fourth quarter broke a 9-9 all and Kiel Matisz scored two minutes later in the Minnesota Swarm’s 11-10 road victory over the Philadelphia Wings on Saturday afternoon.

“We knew this [performance] would come,” coach Joe Sullivan said after the Swarm’s first victory in three National Lacrosse League games. “The guys persevered.”

Jordan MacIntosh had two goals and three assists and Callum Crawford had a goal and four assists to lead the Swarm with five points apiece.

The Swarm will play the Wings (1-3) again at 2 p.m. Sunday in its home opener at the Xcel Energy Center.

• Junior guard Rachel Banham of the Gophers was named one of the top 20 midseason candidates for the John R. Wooden Award by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The most prestigious award in women’s college basketball will be presented in mid-April.

• Alena Brooks, a senior on the Gophers women’s track and field team, set a Northwest Open record at the Minnesota Fieldhouse by winning the 600-meter run in 1:29.65. Freshman teammate Erin Hawkins won the 200 in a meet record 25 seconds flat. Those records had stood for 26 and 14 years, respectively.

• Junior gymnast Ellis Mannon of the Gophers won the all-around (87.05) and finished second in the pommel horse (15.95) in the Windy City Invitational. Minnesota placed fourth in the six-team meet.
