A nationally known stand-up comic is scheduled to be tried next month in Hennepin County on accusations that he sexually assaulted a Mall of America comedy club server at her home, despite the woman throwing several punches and twice kicking her drunken attacker in the groin.
Adam S. Richmond, 39, of West Hollywood, Calif., was arrested and charged with attempted third-degree criminal sexual conduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. He remains free and has been touring pending his trial, which is scheduled for April 28.
After his arrest at his Bloomington hotel room on July 29, 2013, Richmond told police that “maybe I was a little aggressive. I tried to kiss her. I might have grabbed her,” the criminal complaint read.
Acknowledging that he was drunk at the time, Richmond said, “Maybe I was horny. I get excited when I’m drunk,” the complaint continued, noting that his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.17 percent, more than double the amount legally allowed for driving in Minnesota.
Richmond’s resume includes stand-up performances across the nation and numerous television appearances, including on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and “Last Call with Carson Daly.”
Richmond’s manager declined Friday to address the charges.
According to the complaint:
A server at Rick Bronson’s Comedy Club said that Richmond was hitting on her during his five days as the club’s headliner. She made it clear to him that she was not interested, but she agreed to let Richmond stop by her Bloomington home for drinks.
Richmond kept making suggestive comments and grabbing at her, then became more aggressive once the roommates went to bed for the night, the charges said.
She punched him several times and ordered him to leave. He pinned her against the stove, prompting her to knee him in the groin and run outside.
Richmond followed her outside, knocked her down and felt her genitals over her underwear. She kneed him again, ran inside and called 911.
While the line to 911 was open, he took her to the floor and tried to force her to perform oral sex on him, according to the charges.
At that point, Richmond got in a taxi and left.
