A fundraiser is planned Saturday to help pay for the recovery of Ray Widstrand, the 27-year-old who was nearly beaten to death this past summer in St. Paul.
Widstrand was returning to his apartment on the night of Aug. 4 when he was beaten as he walked through a crowd near Payne and Minnehaha avenues. Widstrand suffered severe brain swelling and was initially placed in a medically induced coma. According to his Caring Bridge site, Widstrand is now going through therapy at the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute.
The "Putts for Ray" fundraiser will take place at the Goodrich Golf Dome at 1815 Van Dyke St. in Maplewood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include a mini golf tournament, a silent auction, raffles and food. The $20 entry fee and all other donations will go to a fund set up to help Widstrand as he recovers from his injuries.
