TV picks for May 16:  "Grey's Anatomy,” "American Idol,” "The Office”

The long goodbye

You can’t say NBC isn’t giving “The Office” a proper send-off. First, an hourlong retrospective (7 p.m., KARE, Ch. 11), followed by a 75-minute finale (8 p.m.). Look for guest appearances by Mindy Kaling, Joan Cusack and ... Steve Carell? Possibly. Should be huge. (That’s what she said.)

Duel of the divas

The winner of “American Idol” (7 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9) is crowned, but the real competition to watch is between judge Mariah Carey and guest performer Jennifer Lopez, who some believe is being coaxed to rejoin the series and replace “Mimi.” Let the fake air kisses start flying!

Emergency operation

Season 9 of “Grey’s Anatomy” (8 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5) wraps up with the doctors battling yet another disaster, this time a huge storm that is flooding the wards with patients. Also, one of the doctor’s lives lies in the balance. Again. Remind me to never, ever check into a Seattle hospital.
