Anoka and St. Cloud airport tower closing dates announced

The air traffic control tower at Anoka County-Blaine Airport will be shut down May 5.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had announced earlier this week that the tower at the St. Cloud Regional Airport will be closed April 21.

The FAA said those towers are among 149 at smaller airports around the nation that will be closed soon because a federal budget stalemate had triggered $600 million in cuts at the agency.

The affected towers have been operated by contract workers for the FAA. Anoka County-Blaine handles private and corporate aircraft, while St. Cloud accommodates those and limited commercial service. The airports will rely more on pilots to broadcast their locations and guide takeoffs and landings.
