Perhaps 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue can offer some "pinspiration" for last-minute holiday decorating.

The White House has joined Pinterest, the fast-growing social media website that allows users to "pin" images to virtual bulletin boards.

The first pin? An invitation to a White House Holiday Social featuring Bo, the Obama family dog, frolicking in the snow at the presidential residence.

More boards and pictures popped up Monday, and a blog post from the White House promised future pins of inspiring images, quotes and infographics illustrating life in the executive mansion.

It's the latest venture in social media for a presidential administration often praised for its digital moxie. The move also fits nicely with First Lady Michelle Obama's sense of style, already the subject of photos shared among many "pinners," as the social network's users are known.

But Pinterest is not the only place for an official peek at holiday decor fit for the first family.

The White House website features a cookie recipe for ginger crinkles from the pastry kitchen, photos of the decorations fitting this year's "Joy to All" theme, plus snapshots from holidays as far back as the Kennedy administration.

Then there's Bo leading an inspection of this year's Christmas trees and trimmings. The video posted in late November has been viewed more than 2 million times.

Maybe Barney, the Scottish terrier who became an Internet sensation during George W. Bush's presidency, has been giving him pointers.
