A fund has been set up to help with medical costs for Tyrell Baymon, the 4-year-old St. Paul boy who remains in critical condition after a Saturday hit-and-run accident.

Tyrell's uncle Dennis Scroggins said Tyrell opened his eyes Monday evening when he held the boy's hand. He remains heavily sedated and will undergo further examination in a few days after he recovers from two surgeries that repaired his rib cage and fractured skull.

There is a slight chance Tyrell could have crushed vertebrae in his neck, Scroggins said.

"He's strong; he's fighting," Scroggins said.

Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo bank in care of Tyrell Baymon, account number 6978342720.

Tyrell suffered the injuries when Ernest T. Jonas, 25, allegedly struck him while speeding on a motorcycle. Tyrell was being walked by his mother to a vehicle when he was hit about 1 p.m. in the 400 block of Lafond Avenue. They were preparing to go to Como Park to celebrate Tyrell's birthday.

Jonas was charged Monday with two counts of criminal vehicular operation.
