The Senate Finance Committee approved a Photo ID requirement for all voters and sent it to the Senate Rules Committee.

The committee approved the measure by a 9-6 party line vote, with Republicans supporting it and DFLers opposing it.

It is among the more controversial at the Capitol this year, and would put the question on the November ballot; if voters approve of it, the state constitution would be amended to require all voters to show a photo ID at the polling places.

The committee discussion focused on what will happen to absentee voters, mail-in voters and other groups of voters whose ID could not be shown in person. The sponsor, Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, replied to every question by saying the 2013 Legislature would have to make those decisions.
