Research: Twin Cities near the top in giving money and time

When it comes to giving time and money, residents of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area rank near the top, according to research results released on Tuesday.

The leading metropolitan area for giving money is Salt Lake City, where 68 percent of adults say they live in a household that made a charitable contribution in the past 12 months, according to the Scarborough consumer research firm.

Next was the Twin Cities area (65 percent), followed by Harrisburg, Pa., and Greenville, S.C. (62 percent each). Green Bay, Wis., tied for ninth (61 percent). Nationally, the figure was 56 percent for giving money.

When it came to volunteering, Salt Lake City (41 percent) and the Twin Cities (40 percent) were again at the top. Elsewhere in the Upper Midwest, Des Moines (32 percent) tied for fifth and Milwaukee tied for eighth (31 percent). Nationally, the figure was 27 percent for volunteering time.
