RELAXING RECIPES

Melissa Placzek, author of "Chin Deep in Bubbles," will discuss her collection of home spa recipes and health tips and share a few recipes to take home today at 7 p.m. at Bound to Read, 870 Grand Av. in St. Paul. Need more incentive? A massage therapist will give free chair massages.

COOK WITH HUGH

Chef and author Hugh Carpenter will teach two demonstration classes at Cooks of Crocus Hill. Fast Entrees for Everyday Cooking, which focuses on creating quick, flavorful sauces, is Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Paul store, 877 Grand Av. Secrets of the Perfect Barbecue is Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Edina store, 3925 W. 50th St., and will feature recipes from Carpenter's cookbooks "Hot Barbecue" and "Great Ribs." COOKING KIDS

Kids ages 9 to 12 can learn the power of pastry Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Byerly's cooking school, 3777 Park Center Blvd., St. Louis Park. They'll make pot pies, potato knishes, spinach puffs and rugelach. Cost is $25; call 952-929-2492.

GARLIC

The St. Paul Farmers Market is holding a free garlic festival at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Chef Bruno Oakman of Pazzaluna Trattoria will add Italian flair to some of the more than 100 varieties of garlic sold at the market.

POLISH FEST

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, 420 22nd Av., Minneapolis, will have its Polish Festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. featuring Polish sausage, kapusta, golabki, pierogi, sauerkraut and more. Prices start at $10; call 612-781-9328.
