• Entomologist Marla Spivak is working to protect honeybee populations.
• Honeybees pollinate a third of the U.S. food supply, but parasites, diseases and pesticides are killing them in alarming numbers.
• Spivak's research has focused on "hygienic behavior." She's bred bees that detect sick members of the colony and remove them from the hive.
