In a series of stops, Republican Sen. Dave Thompson will announce on Wednesday that he is running for governor.

Thompson, in his second term, will start at the Minnesota Capitol and travel to Duluth and Rochester before ending his announcement tour with an ice cream social in his suburban Lakeville district.

He will join an increasingly crowded GOP field vying to take down DFL Gov. Mark Dayton next year.

Businessman Scott Honour, Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson and former House Speaker Kurt Zellers have all said they are running for governor. State Sen. Julie Rosen and former gubernatorial candidate Marty Seifert have also expressed some interest in making bids.
