Tuesday night may be ID evening at the Minnesota state Capitol.

A proposed constitutional amendment that would require all voters to show a photo ID at the polls is tentatively scheduled for debate and vote on the House floor Tuesday evening, a spokeswoman for the House Republican caucus said.

The House floor session is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The ID issue, which has moved through committee with all-Republican support, is expected to trigger a lengthy debate, lasting well into the evening.

Sponsored by Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, the bill would allow voters to decide whether to "require all voters to present valid photo identification on election day," in the words of the proposed ballot question.

If voters approve, the 2013 Legislature would determine which IDs would be acceptable and how the requirement would apply to absentee and military voters, Kiffmeyer said.

The Senate version, sposored by Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, will be heard in the Senate Rules Committee on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Senate Republican caucus said the full Senate could debate and vote on the issue Friday or Monday.
