Schmeltzer, Richard "Dick" Charles 05/15/45 - 11/2/2019 Richard passed away on November 2, 2019. A lifelong resident of the Twin Cities he graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1963 and attended the University of Minnesota. He worked for the Star Tribune for over 40 years until his retirement in 2005. He held a variety of jobs from his start in the composing room to TriStar Graphics to single copy sales and the infamous Homer Hanky. He liked to say the paper moved him around trying to find something at which he could excel. A political junkie whose politics like his writing hand leaned left. To the consternation of his wife he was known to begin a conversation by proudly stating that he was a Paul Wellstone liberal. A lifelong student of history and a fan of Minnesota sports and Bill Maher. He and his wife traveled the world. All 7 continents and over 70 countries. Only illness slowed him down. A loving husband. A single father. A dear friend. He is survived by his wife of 34 years (and 9 months), Katherine Warner Johnson, his son Richard Carl George Schmeltzer (Jolene Degel) of Crystal, his sister Joanna Schachtley of West Allis, WI, grandson Andrew Taft Schmeltzer, granddaughter Brandi Breitholtz, sisters-in-law Beth Johnson and Kathy Halbower, brothers-in-law Turner Price and David Johnson and many nieces, nephews and friends around the world who will all miss his gift for gab and endless stories. A celebration of his travel filled life will be held at a later date.
