Timeline of events

1986-1988: Series of groping incidents of young boys in Paynesville, Minn., involving a husky male attacker with a raspy voice.

Jan. 13, 1989: Jared Scheierl, then 12, is kidnapped and sexually assaulted at 9:45 p.m. in Cold Spring, Minn. His attacker released him and told him not to look back or he would shoot him. He was described as 5 feet 6 inches or 5-7, 170 lbs., with a deep raspy voice. Scheierl's sweatshirt, snowmobile suit and T-shirt were taken into evidence.

Oct. 22, 1989: Jacob Wetterling, 11, is abducted by a masked man on a road near his house in rural St. Joseph, Minn., while returning from a Tom Thumb store with his brother and a friend. He was described as 5-9 or 5-10, about 180 pounds with a low, rough voice. He told Jacob's brother and friend not to look back or he would shoot them.

Dec. 16, 1989: Daniel Heinrich is interviewed by the FBI. He said he couldn't recall where he was on Jan. 13 or Oct. 22.

Jan. 12, 1990: Heinrich is re-interviewed by law enforcement. He also volunteered body hair samples for testing.

Feb. 9, 1990: Heinrich is arrested on probable cause for Scheierl's kidnapping. He emphatically stated his innocence and invoked his right to an attorney. He was later released without being charged.

July 18, 2012: DNA analysis is done on Scheierl's sweatshirt, snowmobile suit and T-shirt.

January 2014: Scheierl wrote a letter to the Paynesville Press asking victims of attacks there in the late 1980s to contact the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

March 5, 2014: DNA analysis is done on a baseball cap collected in one of the Paynesville attacks. It contained a mixture of DNA from three or more individuals.

May 12, 2015: Heinrich's hair samples from 1990 are taken to BCA evidence unit for DNA testing.

July 10, 2015: Heinrich's DNA is found on Scheierl's sweatshirt. He could not be ruled out as a DNA contributor to the Paynesville hat. However, 80.5 percent of the population could be excluded.

July 28, 2015: Investigators searched Heinrich's Annandale, Minn., home for links to Scheierl, Wetterling and the Paynesville attacks.

Oct. 28, 2015: Heinrich, 52, is arrested at his Annandale home on child pornography charges.
