Stillwater's Spencer Scott broke a scoreless tie with a goal with 10 minutes, 5 seconds left to help give the second-seeded Ponies a 2-0 victory over Apple Valley in the Class 2A soccer quarterfinals Wednesday at Chisago Lakes.

Stillwater had several chances to score throughout the game, especially in the second half but were thwarted by goalkeeper Parker Jamison and the Eagles defense until Scott's goal.

"It's kind of indicative of our season as a whole," Ponies coach Jake Smothers said. "It is something these guys are getting used to. The late goal becomes stressful. The 0-0 tie becomes stressful, but the way they're playing … We had a ton of confidence we were going to get one before Apple Valley."

Scott finally broke through with a header off a corner kick from Nicholas Purdie, popping the ball over a crowd at the goal line.

The Ponies extended the lead with 1:25 left. Scott passed the ball to Max Stauffer at the far side of the net. Stauffer was able to slide the ball under Jamison.

Ponies goalkeeper Fred LeClair was not tested much, but stopped nine shots.

Duluth East midfielder Zach Madill tried to control the ball with his chest.

"That's what he does well," Smothers said. "He will make some big saves along the way, but his biggest asset is his intelligence and his voice. He doesn't have to make a lot of saves because he is telling our defensive players what to do. His biggest asset is organizing that back four so he doesn't have to catch the ball if he doesn't want to."

The Ponies had a goal disallowed in the first half on a foul. The Eagles goalkeeper was run into, allowing the ball to bounce past him and into the net.

"It was early enough in the game that they were able to shake it off and keep playing," Smothers said. "If it was later in the game when the tensions start to rise, it would have been a different story."

Duluth East 1, Lakeville North 0: The Greyhounds' Seth Hoffman scored early in the second half for the only goal of the defensive battle.

Hoffman slipped a shot off a pass from teammate Jackson Manthey under the sprawling Panthers goalkeeper 29 seconds into the second half.

"Normally, we score first," Lakeville North senior midfielder Max Kent said. "It was a change. We just got scared and panicked. We felt pressure to get the ball forward and it kind of ruined our style of play."

After taking the lead, the Greyhounds had a little momentum and used it to throttle the Panthers, who had few opportunities to get a good scoring chance.

"They just shut us down in the midfield," Kent said. "It was hard to build up play. We couldn't connect as forwards as we normally do."

Maple Grove 2, Prior Lake 1 (OT): Senior attacker Jeff Clune scored the overtime goal in the 97th minute as the Crimson (16-1-2) edged the Lakers (14-5-1). Teammate junior Riley Gill tied it at 1-all with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Senior Logan Weller opened the scoring for Prior Lake with a header off corner kick in the 31st minute.

Wayzata 4, Mounds View 1: Senior Erik Williams broke open a close game with back-to-back second-half goals as the No. 1-ranked Trojans (18-0-2) pulled away from the Mustangs (9-9-2) in St. Cloud. Wayzata held a 2-1 lead before Williams tallied in the 50th and 67th minute. Earlier in the second half, teammate sophomore Patrick Weah and Mounds View senior Elijah Paulin scored 16 seconds apart, both in the 44th minute. Wayzata senior Sadra Golzarian scored the lone goal in the first half in the 10th minute.
