One person was killed and a sheriff's deputy was wounded when gunfire was exchanged during a law enforcement pursuit Friday afternoon in Gilbert, on Minnesota's East Mesabi Iron Range.

At about 1:15 p.m., a St. Louis County sheriff's deputy and a Gilbert police officer were searching for an individual on a warrant, according to a news release from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. They saw a vehicle they thought was linked to the wanted person when a person left the vehicle and started to run.

A chase on foot ended in an alley, and several shots were fired, the release said. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. The BCA did not say whether the dead person was the suspect being sought. It also did not release the person's gender.

The BCA said it found a handgun at the site of the shooting, and is in the early stages of its investigation.

The deputy was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth for a noncritical gunshot wound, the BCA said. The police officer wasn't hurt, but was taken to a hospital in Virginia, Minn., for evaluation.

The name of the person who died will be made public after an autopsy by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office, the BCA said. More information, including the names of officers involved, will be released after identification and interviews.
