A man and his girlfriend have been charged in connection with a drive-by shooting in South St. Paul last week that wounded a 51-year-old man following a dispute over a borrowed car.

Desean Thomas, 22, and Breanna Harris, 21, were arrested within 24 hours of the shooting, court records show. Thomas was charged Friday with second-degree attempted murder, drive-by shooting and illegal possession of a firearm in the Aug. 19 shooting, court records show, while Harris faces a single count of second-degree assault.

Bond for Thomas, who is being held at the Dakota County jail in Hastings, was set at $750,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 2.

The shooting occurred about 11:45 p.m. on April 19 in the area of Motor Avenue and Bircher Avenue.

Authorities say that after spotting the victim, who had been trying to retrieve a car he lent Harris, Thomas got out of his SUV and opened fire on the other man, before fleeing. Fourteen shell casings were found at the scene, said South St. Paul Police Chief Bill Messerich.

The victim, who was grazed in the hip, was treated and released at the scene, according to Messerich.

An omnibus hearing for Harris, who is being held on $150,000 bond, was set for Sept. 16.
