A man shot nearly seven years ago in Minneapolis has died, and police say the perpetrator has already served his time for the crime.

Lionel W. Miles, 50, died Wednesday at Assisted Living at Lyndale Manor in north Minneapolis, the Hennepin County medical examiner's office said Sunday.

Miles, of Minneapolis, was shot on Nov. 11, 2007, at a home in the 3900 block of Lyndale Avenue in north Minneapolis. Complications from his wound led to his death, the medical examiner's office said.

The shooter was convicted and "has already served time for assault," said police spokesman John Elder. That conviction leaves little to no room for him to be charged for the same act, but it will be up to the county attorney's office to make that determination.

Tyrus L. Hayes, of Minneapolis and now 39, pleaded guilty in early 2009 to first-degree assault. He was sentenced to slightly more than six years in prison and was given credit for about 14 months of time already served.

Hayes left prison in January 2012 and served the rest of his time on supervised release.

Authorities have not said what prompted the shooting.

Reached by telephone Sunday morning, Hayes said he knew Miles had died and declined to comment further, other than to say, "My prayers go out to his family and loved ones."

Family members of Miles declined to discuss his death Sunday.
