The Stillwater Lift Bridge is broken, but it is not affecting vehicular traffic. River traffic is unable to get through.
A cable frayed and snapped as the bridge was being lowered just after 8 p.m. Sunday. MnDOT has inspection and repair crews on the scene.
It could take until noon or longer to fix the problem, said MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard.
"These things can take a while," he said. Crews also will be checking to be sure there was no other damage.
The bridge connects downtown Stillwater with western Wisconsin.
