A 21-year-old woman was charged Thursday in the stabbing death of another woman in the victim's home on the Fond du Lac Indian reservation, west of Duluth, authorities said.

Lydia M. Barney was charged in St. Louis County District Court with second-degree murder in the killing of Waubunoquay D. Randall, 31, of Stoney Brook Township, said County Attorney Mark Rubin.

Barney, also of Stoney Brook Township, remains jailed ahead of her arraignment Friday.

Rubin said the details in the complaint would remain undisclosed until Friday's hearing. He declined say what role Barney allegedly played in Randall's death on Sunday.

Barney's criminal history in Minnesota includes five convictions on various theft counts in the past three years, with four of those offenses occurring in the Twin Cities. As recently as 2012 she was living in Richfield.

Randall's husband, who lives in nearby Cloquet, had been jailed in the killing since Monday but was released Thursday without being charged. That does not preclude prosecutors from charging him later.

"This is an ongoing and active investigation," Sheriff's Lt. Jason Lukovsky said in a statement after the charges were announced.

Lukovsky said Randall was stabbed numerous times, and authorities are confident that they have recovered the knife.

About the time investigators were in Randall's home Sunday, a suspicious fire was burning in a home down the street, the lieutenant said. Clothes were found on fire in an oven, and that incident could be related to Randall's killing, Lukovsky said.

The clothing has been recovered for examination by state forensic experts, the lieutenant added.
