A newborn girl was discovered dead in a southern Minnesota home, and a 14-year-old girl who was at the residence at the time has been hospitalized, authorities said Sunday.

Emergency responders found the baby about 5:45 p.m. Friday in an apartment in the 100 block of 3rd Street N., a block west of Butterfield City Hall, according to the Watonwan County Sheriff's Office.

The newborn was taken to the Ramsey County medical examiner's office to determine what led to the death.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jeremy Nachreiner said investigators are "working through a language barrier" as they gather information from Spanish speakers.

The teenager first was transported to St. James Mayo Hospital, then to Mankato Mayo Hospital. The Sheriff's Office has no information about her condition and has not made public how she is connected to the newborn.

While the Sheriff's Office has asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for assistance in the case, no suspects are being sought in the death and no arrests have been made, Nachreiner said.

The identities of the baby and the girl have not been released.

Butterfield, with a population of about 600, is 45 miles west of Mankato.
