In an earlier crash up north, a woman died in a head-on crash on icy roads.

A 47-year-old woman from Willernie, in Washington County, was fatally injured when she was struck by a vehicle Friday night while walking in Mahto- medi.

The woman, who was wearing dark clothing and walking in the traffic lane on Hilton Trail where it runs close to Hallam Avenue, was struck by a northbound car driven by a 20-year-old man from Pine Springs, according to Sgt. Tim Tuthill of the Washington County Sheriff's Office. He did not have the exact time of the accident, but he said it occurred after sunset and that she was walking in an area with no lighting.

The woman, whose name has not been released, died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The driver, who had tried to avoid her, stopped immediately and is cooperating with authorities, Tuthill said. No citations were issued.

Tuthill said police had been asked to check on the welfare of the woman and were searching for her when they received news that she had been struck.

On Thursday, a 63-year-old woman from Plummer, Minn., died in a head-on crash on icy roads in Pennington County, the State Patrol reported.

Madonna Lallier was fatally injured just after 10 a.m. when the car she was driving north on Hwy. 59 crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by Elwin Ness, 54, of Middle River, Minn., who suffered noncritical injuries.
