Continued: The father-son dynamic often is fraught with uncomfortable silence

“My father never gave up on me. I don’t recall him saying a whole lot of profound things. It was just being there,” said Martin, now a tax attorney. “The love I received, the unconditional love, was efficient in helping me recognize who was really important.”

That includes being the best possible father himself, which has been made infinitely easier by putting his rift with his father behind him.

Now Martin’s goal is “to be for my son that pillar, that rock my father was to me.”
