Q: We're planning to remodel a large bathroom and want a welcoming focal point for the room that will really get some attention. The issue is that my husband and I are not exactly sure what that main focal point should be. Any ideas on how we can create a wow factor as soon as you walk into the space?

A: For larger bathrooms, I recommend moving the bathtub out of the traditional alcove area into a more open space without any surrounding walls. This can create a very dramatic look.

In the past this was usually done by framing in an island-type setup, then installing a drop-in or under-mount bathtub inside the finished island.

However, a new trend is to install a free-standing bathtub in place of the custom-built island setup. A free-standing bath is finished inside and out and accessible from all sides. Basically, you move it into place and install the plumbing. It's almost like installing a big fancy vase in the middle of your bathroom.

Just remember that free-standing baths are primarily used for soaking, so in most cases you will need to have a separate shower stall in the bathroom as well. This type of tub is usually a high-cost option.

Small space options

Q: What are some space-saving ideas to keep in mind when trying to install a "two person" bathtub in a smaller bathroom area?

A: With today's new compact tub designs, it is possible to get some extra bathing room with a smaller footprint than traditional larger-size bathtubs. Basically, you can choose from two styles, depending on what may best fit your bathroom.

First, you can look at a deep-wall soaking tub. This type of bathtub usually fits standard tub spaces, but can have arm and back rests on both sides of the tub along with a deeper wall design. This allows the users to be in a more seated position while still enjoying a deeper soaking experience. Second, you can check out a corner-mounted bath. The corner-style layout minimizes the footprint but still provides some extra bathing room by using up the corner area. Both of these styles can be set up with whirlpool or bubble jets for extra comfort.
