Does your home have showcase potential?

Local interior designers are seeking the right site for next year's designer showcase home event. If you're considering a major remodel in the near future, this represents an opportunity to get professional design services free of charge. That's not to say you'll get a free whole-house makeover.

"There needs to be a major remodel of the kitchen and bathrooms, and the homeowner needs to be prepared to do that," said Karen McKay, chairwoman of this year's event. But the homeowner will have access to substantial discounts on materials and decor, as well as get a quick turn for their project.

A showcase home can represent any architectural style. The home doesn't have to be huge, but should be "generous" in size, with enough different rooms and spaces so that many designers can be involved in the makeover, McKay said.

Location is critical. The showcase home must be in an accessible location for pedestrians and drive-by viewing, and must have ample street parking. A large lawn or grounds, to accommodate special events, also is important.

And one last thing: The homeowner must be willing to live elsewhere for about six months during the makeover and public tour.
