THE Travelers: The Miller family of Hutchinson, Minn.

The scene: Andrew Miller, 20, shot this photo of his brother Nick standing on a summit of the Wave, a striking, swirling sandstone rock formation in the Coyote Buttes area near the Arizona-Utah border.

the TRIP: "Only 20 people per day are allowed in [to the Wave], to protect the fragile environment," Andrew's father Mark Miller wrote in an e-mail. "Ten are selected the day before and 10 are selected [in advance] via an online lottery. We put our name in the lottery to hike the Wave in February. Our family of five was selected from hundreds of entries each day, and made the trip in early June."

About this shot: "An added benefit [of the lottery] is that there is ample opportunity to take spectacular photos without strangers in the shot," Mark Miller wrote. "We liked this particular photo because it demonstrates not only the beauty but also the magnitude of the area."

The Equipment: A Nikon D5500 compact DSLR camera.
