The scene: The sky behind Mount Rushmore National Memorial, in the Black Hills of South Dakota, took on a beautiful hue as a rainstorm gathered just before sunset.
The Trip: Hedlund and her husband camped late May at Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City, S.D., and enjoyed cool weather, few other tourists and a central location for exploring the Black Hills. "Must-sees are, of course, the Badlands, Custer State Park, Needles Highway and any of the other scenic drives. And then there is Mount Rushmore," she wrote, calling the memorial colossal, magnificent and fascinating. She recommends spending time in the museum to learn how artist Gutzon Borglum and his workers made his vision a reality. "This was my third trip there over my lifetime, and I still get goose bumps," Hedlund wrote in an e-mail. She warned that the area around the monument has grown more commercialized since her previous trip, in 1991.
How I got this shot: iPhone SE. "I did zoom in a bit for this particular shot. Otherwise we just sat there and watched Mother Nature provide us with an amazing sky due to the imminent sunset and an approaching thunderstorm."
