Vos says Assembly won't make voucher change affecting Racine

MADISON, Wis. — Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says the state budget will not be amended to change criteria affecting who can enroll in the voucher school program in Racine.

A draft of a proposed Republican amendment released to Democrats on Tuesday night included a provision that would have deleted the requirement that participants in Racine's voucher program must come from a public school.

That would have allowed students currently in private schools to receive a taxpayer-funded voucher, if their school is in the program. It was anticipated to add 750 students to the program in Racine over the next two years.

But Vos said Thursday that would not be included in an amendment the Assembly planned to vote on Wednesday making more than two dozen changes to the budget.
