A man found in a car with a fatal gunshot wound in north Minneapolis was identified Thursday by authorities as being from suburban Chicago.

Nathaniel Smith, 33, of Dolton, Ill., was shot early Monday evening, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Police initially apprehended two men at the scene, with one of them jailed. That person, a 23-year-old Minneapolis man, was released Wednesday without charges.

A ShotSpotter detection device picked up several shots being fired near 21st Avenue and Ilion Avenue N., police said. A few blocks later, on W. Broadway near Ilion, law enforcement came upon the wounded Smith, according to police. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said they think the car rolled down the hill, crossed Broadway and ended up in a grassy area where there once was a house.

Investigators initially suspected the shooting followed an argument between Smith and the two men who were apprehended. Police have yet to say more about a potential motive for the killing.
