Design lessons via Paris and London

August 5, 2016 at 4:45PM

While planned-out Paris gets lots of love, London, with its architectural diversity, is a better model for us.

Monumental structures (like Big Ben) need some green space to breathe (thank you, the Commons at U.S. Bank Stadium). Too much space, can make a place feel oppressively empty.

Block E should have become a public area, like Piccadilly Circus.

The Art Institute should have been closer to downtown, perhaps by Loring Park.

The Cathedral of St. Paul should have included an open area for people to gather, like Sacre-Coeur.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
