Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after just over two years of marriage.

An attorney for Jolie, Robert Offer, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that she has filed for the dissolution of the marriage. Offer said the decision was made "for the health of the family."

Jolie listed their official date of separation as Sept. 15, per TMZ. She is asking for physical custody of the couple's six children and will ask that Pitt receive visitation rights. Pitt officially adopted three of Jolie's children, while Jolie gave birth to three more children of their own over the course of their relationship.

"Brangelina," as they were dubbed by the media, met on the set of the film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," in which they played rival assassins who also happen to be married to each other. There was widespread speculation at the time that their relationship began onset and that Pitt divorced Jennifer Aniston so he could be with Jolie.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids," Pitt said in a statement to People. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

They were officially married in a private ceremony at a French chateau in August 2014. In 2015, they co-starred in the drama "By the Sea," which followed a married couple trying to repair their marriage during a stay at a hotel in 1970's France.

With their combined star power, Pitt and Jolie have long been considered one of Hollywood's most powerful couples. Both have found success not only in front of the camera, but also behind it.

Jolie found success as a director with such films as the 2014 biopic of World War II POW Louis Zamperini "Unbroken." She also directed, wrote and produced "By the Sea" under her married name of Angelina Jolie-Pitt.

Pitt, meanwhile, has become quite the successful producer through his Plan B Entertainment banner. Some of the films he has produced include "The Departed," "The Big Short," and "Selma." He is also an executive producer on the new Ryan Murphy FX series "Feud."
