With starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy working his way through the NFL concussion protocol, the Vikings re-signed Desmond Ridder to their practice squad Thursday to give them more depth at the position.

The Vikings first signed Ridder, the former Falcons starter, in September after McCarthy went down to a high ankle sprain. Ridder was waived Oct. 4.

Undrafted rookie Max Brosmer is in line for his first NFL start Sunday against the Seahawks in Seattle. He took first-team reps during Wednesday’s practice, coach Kevin O’Connell said.

McCarthy reported concussion symptoms after the team’s flight back from Sunday’s loss in Green Bay. He was listed as limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday.

Besides Brosmer, the Vikings had only one other quarterback available if McCarthy is not. They signed John Wolford to their practice squad Oct. 29, shortly after it was announced Carson Wentz would have shoulder surgery. Wolford has been running the scout-team offense this week.

Ridder, a Falcons third-round pick in 2022, took over the starting job from Marcus Mariota toward the end of that season and started 13 games for Atlanta in 2023 before signing with the Raiders last year. He was in Bengals training camp this summer before being waived in advance of final roster cuts on Aug. 26.

A broken team plane. A slew of starters, including QB J.J. McCarthy, felled by injuries. And a three-game win streak for team that continues to fight.
