Just months after opening a second location in Minneapolis, Rosalia will open a third restaurant in St. Louis Park in October. The wood-fired pizzeria is under construction inside Texa-Tonka Shopping Center (8000 Minnetonka Blvd.), taking over the former Revival restaurant space and expansive patio.

“With this larger space, the kitchen itself is much larger and allows us to add to what we’re doing,” said Kiri Gray, operations director for the DDP Restaurant Group.

In addition to the pizzas, dips and salads that Rosalia fans enjoy, the expanded space will allow for a whole selection of new Sicilian pastas. Along with the gluten-friendly crusts and flatbread, they’re working on gluten-free pasta options, too.

Not only is the kitchen building in more options, the bar will also offer an array of cocktails, spritzes and Amaros from beverage director Megan Luedtke.

This fresh space is part of a larger plan for the Rosalia brand to step out on its own. Gray says they’d been eyeing the greater metro area, especially the western suburbs, for a location when this one became available. And unlike the other locations, this one comes with more parking.

“It’s been fun,” said Gray. “Every time I’m over there, someone is trying to peek in the windows and asking what’s happening with the space,” she said. “They’re so eager — we’re eager to be there and be more accessible to people.”

The first Rosalia opened in Linden Hills in September 2020. Service started as takeout during the pandemic before growing to include a few dine-in tables and a lush patio.

The second restaurant opened on E. Hennepin Avenue this spring. Like that one, Christian Dean Architecture is overseeing the Texa-Tonka design.

The investment in Rosalia comes after DDP Restaurant Group closed all locations of Cafe Ceres coffee shops this spring. DDP Restaurant Group also owns Martina, Colita, Porzana, Dexter’s and Minari, all in Minneapolis.

Malt Shop reopens for a new era

The Malt Shop, at 809 W. 50th St. in Minneapolis, is back. Opened in 1973, it had changed hands several times before closing last year. Now it’s back with a refresh and a nostalgia-inducing menu of malts (obviously), burgers, chicken tenders, a lineup of dirty sodas and more. It’s open from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Football Pizza expands to Eden Prairie

Another outpost serving up those distinctively shaped halal pizzas will open at 582 Prairie Center Drive on Aug. 6. Football Pizza will take over the former Red Savoy’s address for the company’s third location.

Founded on Central Avenue NE. in Minneapolis by Meerwais Azizi in 2000, the shop with the distinctively shaped pizzas quickly gained a dedicated following. A second location, at 3825 Cedar Grove Pkwy. in Eagan, opened in 2024. In addition to the signature pizzas, the restaurants offer a blend of cultures on the menus like gyros, wings, chicken tikka, salads, baklava and more.

Coffeehouse opening by Minnehaha Falls

Arya Cafe will host a grand opening Aug. 9 at 4605 Minnehaha Av. S., Mpls. On the menu are matcha, coffee and other beverages centered around Up Coffee Roasters’ single-origin Ethiopian beans. Treats from Rustica Bakery will be in the pastry case. The soft opening launched last week with afternoon and evening hours, staying open until 9 p.m., but permanent hours have yet to be announced. The cafe replaces former tenant Cafe Ceres at the base of the Wakpada Apartments.

D’s Bánh Mì reopening after storefront damage

After a long wait, D’s Bánh Mì (1848 E. 38th St., Mpls.) will finally reopen Aug. 7 at 10:30 a.m. The sandwich-starring stand has been rebuilding after a car accident took out a power line that sparked a fire on top of the restaurant earlier this year. Opened in 2023, D’s Bánh Mì had been managing the downtime with delivery orders, which have paused as they prepare to reopen the stand.

Sonic set to open at U union

Sonic, the fast-food chain with the brightly colored slushies and other fried foods, is set to open inside the University of Minnesota’s Coffman Union. The chain, known for its drive-in-style service, will open where cars can’t go, next to the lower-level Starbucks.

Sonic will be open from breakfast through dinner with burgers, coneys and the like. Look for an opening after students return this fall. It’s the first Minneapolis outpost for Sonic.
