First responders from Champlin were honored Friday for their swift response and efforts to save the lives of Sen. John Hoffman and his family. The event includes a charity golf tournament in Ham Lake.
The “Guns and Hoses” event at Majestic Oaks Golf Club was a fundraiser for the Front Line Foundation, which provides financial support to families of first responders who have died in the line of duty.
Hoffman, DFL-Champlin, and his wife, Yvette, were shot multiple times in their home on June 14 by a man posing as a police officer. The couple’s daughter, Hope, was credited with helping save her parents’ lives and alerting law enforcement that others may be in danger.
“The Hoffman family will be forever grateful and indebted to the police, EMTs and first responders that saved our lives after the attack,” the family said in a new statement. “While we can’t join you today, we want to amplify the importance of these everyday heroes to ensure they have the support and recognition that they so duly deserve.”
A ceremony was held Friday afternoon.
“This is our way to thank her [Hope] and the first responders who rose from tragedy and saved lives,” Suzanne Holt, president and executive director of the Front Line Foundation, said in a statement. “We are honored to be able to begin the tournament with a time of reflection and gratitude for the men and women who helped in saving lives that horrific morning.”
The event also included a silent auction, with proceeds going to the foundation and Lino Lake Volunteers in Public Safety.
The suspected gunman in the case, Vance Boelter, has also been charged with shooting and killing House Democratic leader Melissa Hortman and her husband in their Brooklyn Park home that same June night. On Thursday, a Hennepin County grand jury indicted Boelter on eight charges, including with premeditated first-degree murder. Boelter has pleaded not guilty to separate federal charges.
