Minnesota will hold special elections in January to fill the House seats of Reps. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger and Kaohly Vang Her, who were both elected to other offices earlier this month.
Hemmingsen-Jaeger, DFL-Woodbury, won a special Senate election to replace former Sen. Nicole Mitchell, who was convicted of burglary this summer. Her, DFL-St. Paul, was elected mayor of St. Paul and takes office in January.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz issued writs of special election Monday afternoon to fill the two members’ House seats.
Candidates can file affidavits of candidacy from Nov. 18 through Nov. 25. If necessary, primary elections will be held on Dec. 16. The special general elections are set for Jan. 27.
Both House seats are relatively safe for Democrats. Hemmingsen-Jaeger won the seat in 2022 with more than 60% of the vote. The district includes Woodbury and part of Maplewood.
Her won her St. Paul district, which encompasses several neighborhoods along Summit Avenue, with 83% of the vote.
