A 19-year-old pickup truck driver crossed into the opposite lane on a highway connecting Duluth and Grand Rapids, and died in a head-on collision with a snowplow, authorities said Thursday.

The crash occurred about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday on Hwy. 2 east of Floodwood, killing Winston R. Lahti, of Brookston, Minn., the State Patrol said.

According to the patrol:

Lahti was heading east on the wet two-lane highway and "swerved into the westbound lane," then collided with the Minnesota Department of Transportation snowplow.

The impact left the totaled pickup on its side on the south shoulder.

Plow driver Kimberly A. Bergstrom, 47, of Duluth, was hospitalized with noncritical injuries.
