A man wounded in one of two mass shootings within 12 hours Monday on Lake Street has died, marking the second person to be killed in the gunfire that left a dozen people wounded.

Minneapolis police said Adam John Peterson, 46, died in the hospital Saturday following the shooting at 11:10 a.m. near E. Lake Street and Stevens Avenue S. He was one of five men ages 24 to 46 struck by gunfire near the Interstate 35W off-ramp, Midtown Greenway transit bus tower station. The area, long been plagued by violence and open drug use, has since been fenced off with extra patrols in the area.

Peterson’s death is the second in connection with the pair of mass shootings.

Jacinda Oakgrove, 30, died Thursday, three days after being critically wounded in a separate shooting at a private encampment, police said.

Oakgrove, who was staying in the encampment near 28th Avenue S. and E. Lake Street, was struck in the head during an exchange of gunfire late Monday that injured six others.

Minneapolis police officers swarming the scene just after 10 p.m. discovered Oakgrove critically wounded in a nearby tent. She was rushed to HCMC, where she died Thursday.

Investigators recovered approximately 30 shell casings from at least two suspected firearms.

The shooting occurred at the encampment set up by prominent Minneapolis landlord Hamoudi Sabri in a parking lot behind a vacant building he owns on E. Lake Street. City leaders had fought for months to have the unsanctioned shelter cleared on grounds that it presented a public health nuisance. Sabri vowed to battle the city in court to keep it open.

But in the aftermath of the shooting, Mayor Jacob Frey directed city workers to close the encampment and remove all remaining debris.

One man was arrested Thursday, police said, on the suspicion of aiding and abetting after the fact. But he has since been released from custody pending a formal criminal complaint.

It remains unclear whether the shooting was related to the earlier mass shooting that injured five people on Monday morning, just 2 miles away on E. Lake Street. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a news briefing earlier in the week that multiple gunmen were believed to be involved in each shooting.
