It would not be a summer weekend without a couple of highway closures, and busy routes in the southeast and southwest of the Twin Cities will be shut down.

Both directions of Interstate 494 in Inver Grove Heights will be closed between Blaine Avenue and Babcock Trail in the vicinity of Hwy. 52. Motorists will be detoured from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.

Westbound I-494 drivers will be sent north on Hwy. 52 to Mendota Road, then south on Hwy. 52 back to I-494.

Drivers heading east on I-494 will go south on Hwy. 52 to 70th Street, then back north to I-494.

Crews will be demolishing the northbound Hwy. 52 bridge over I-494. When roads reopen Monday, all Hwy. 52 traffic will run head-to-head on the new southbound bridge between Upper 55th Street and Mendota Road.

In Eden Prairie, both directions of Hwy. 5 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between Eden Prairie Road and Mitchell Road.

The same segment of Hwy. 5 also will be closed Aug. 1-4 as crews continue with a concrete repair project.

In Minneapolis, westbound Hwy. 55 will be shut down from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between Penn Avenue and Hwy. 100.

Starting late Sunday night, MnDOT will shut down the Interstate 394 EZ Pass lanes between Hwy. 100 and downtown Minneapolis. The lanes reserved for buses, motorcycles, carpools and solo drivers who pay a fee to use them won’t reopen until late fall. MnDOT is conducting a pavement and bridge repair project that will run through the 2026 construction season.
