Abbey Murphy scored two of her three goals in the third period as the No. 3 Gophers women’s hockey team rallied for a 5-2 road victory over No. 13 Boston University on Saturday.
The Gophers trailed 2-1 after two periods before scoring four goals in the third period to complete a series sweep of the Terriers. The Gophers scored three times in the third period in a 5-0 victory Friday.
“Great comeback,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said, “in a tough place to play being down 2-1 after two periods. Love seeing the fight and the character of our group that they’re playing with. Getting back on top of their game, stacking their shifts and getting some momentum.
“Great game by Murph again, getting us going. Nelli Laitinen, our other captain, as well with a huge goal. Really proud of the group and the resiliency they’ve shown.”
Murphy, who had two goals and an assist in the series opener, scored with 14 minutes, 2 seconds remaining to tie the score 2-2. Nelli Laitinen and Tereza Plosova scored 21 seconds apart midway through the period to put the Gophers ahead 4-2.
Murphy completed the hat trick with an empty-neter with 75 seconds to play. Murphy’s three points gave her 210 points for her career as she moved past Grace Zumwinkle (209 points) into the No. 8 spot on the program’s career scoring list.
In four games this season, Murphy has nine goals and six assists.
The Gophers outshot the Terriers 12-3 in the third period. Each team had 24 shots on goal after two periods.
