Gophers vs. Maryland women's basketball preview

The Gophers will retire Rachel Banham's number before taking on former Gophers coach Brenda Frese and the No.4 Terrapins.

Gophers update: The Gophers (9-5, 0-1 Big Ten) lost 87-62 to No. 14 Ohio State in their Big Ten opener on Wednesday night in Columbus. Junior center Bryanna Fernstrom had 10 points and 12 rebounds in her Gophers debut. The Iowa State transfer finished her redshirt year after the fall semester. She should be a regular in the lineup moving forward. … The Gophers will retire Rachel Banham's No. 1 during a pregame ceremony. Banham ended her Gophers career last season as the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer with 3,093 points. Her historic senior season earned national attention. Banham's banner will hang in the Williams Arena rafters with those of other Gophers greats Laura Coenen, Carol Ann Shudluck, Lindsey Whalen and Linda Roberts.

Terrapins update: The No. 4 Terrapins (12-1, 0-0) lost for the first time on Thursday against No. 1 Connecticut 87-81 in front of a sold-out Maryland crowd of 17,950. Terrapins coach Brenda Frese spent one season at Minnesota, leading the biggest turnaround in Big Ten history in 2001-02. She was named National Coach of the Year and then hired by Maryland. The Terps have earned 12 NCAA tournament berths, made two Final Four appearances and won one national championship in Frese's 14 seasons. Since joining the Big Ten, Maryland and Frese are 2-0 against the Gophers. The Terps won by 33 points last season.
