Former Gophers safety Brock Vereen retired from the NFL on Monday, two days shy of his 24th birthday.

Vereen was in camp with the New England Patriots, his third NFL team, in the start of his third season.

He was a fourth round pick of Chicago in 2014 and started four games for the Bears that season. He was released by Chicago early last season, and spent two weeks on the Vikings practice squad.

Vereen's brother, Shane, is a former Patriot who plays for the New York Giants.
