Deputy shoots and wounds man with knife on a road in Wright County, officials say

The man disobeyed orders to drop the weapon, the Sheriff’s Office said.

A Wright County sheriff’s deputy shot a man who was holding a knife after he would not drop the weapon as ordered, officials said Wednesday.

The confrontation occurred around 9 p.m. Tuesday in Monticello in the 900 block of Golf Course Road, read a Sheriff’s Office statement.

As of Wednesday morning, the man was in stable condition at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, the statement read. Officials have yet to release his identity.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said its agents and other investigatory personnel went to the scene to collect evidence.

“More information will be made available after the preliminary investigation is complete,” a BCA statement read.

According to the Sheriff’s Office:

A caller to 911 reported there was a man with a large knife in the street and yelling.

Deputies encountered the man walking in the road. They ordered him to halt and drop the knife, but he “ignored commands,” the statement noted.

“As the male advanced on the deputies,” the statement continued, “a Taser was deployed, but did not stop the male.”

A second deputy then shot the man with a firearm. He was taken into custody, and first aid was administered before he was hospitalized.

The deputies involved in this incident were not injured and will be placed on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure under these circumstances.

On Tuesday, a similar incident occurred to the east in Plymouth, according to police there.

An officer responding to a reported domestic disturbance shot and wounded a man who police say was armed. The shooting occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. outside a home in the 6100 block of Quinwood Lane N., a police statement read.

The man was knocking on an apartment window and was soon confronted by the officer in the parking lot, the statement continued.

The man, armed with a handgun, was shot by the officer, the statement added. Police did not say what prompted the officer to shoot.

Officials have yet to release the man’s identity. He was las reported to be in stable condition at North Memorial.
